This Go STEM Institute is a virtual one-week Science, Technology, Engineering and Math experience for young people in grades 7-12. Facilitated by the CDO-STEM Council, CORE, and the A.J. Read Science Discovery Center of SUNY Oneonta, the Go STEM Institute is a great opportunity for a science-motivated young person to get hands-on with high technology and high concepts— all while having lots of fun! The 2021 Go STEM Winter Break Institute will run from February 15th-19th from 9am-Noon.
We know that many children are burned out by online school, so we’ve designed our institute to be fun, with as much hands-on experience as possible. Each participant will receive a kit of activities before the Institute begins that will enable them to complete the sound/electronics projects at home (safely, of course!). Institute mornings will begin with an online group session, overview of the day, and short content activities, demos, or speakers. After that, participants will work on group activities or transition to independent work with their kits, which can be completed solo or with the live online guidance of a college student mentor.
Our Theme: Electronics and Sound
Sound and electronics have been intertwined since the invention of the electrical microphone in the 1920’s. Since then, sound has been created, recorded and played back electrically by billions of people all over the world. Devices such as a phone, microphone, electric guitar, synthesizer and many more use electricity to generate and store sound, but how do these work? Join us as we learn the essentials of electronics and how we can harness the energy of the electron to create sound. Most importantly, we’ll learn how to build some of these sound generating devices to create music! We will build several exciting projects that demonstrate how energy travels from batteries to speakers to our ears. Participants will learn the fundamentals of soldering, circuit building, analog and digital electronics, and soundwave generation. You will be amazed at the sounds that you can create with just a few simple electronic components!
The institute will be led by Gavin Vitale. Gavin is the Instructional Support Technician and an adjunct lecturer in the Music Department at SUNY Oneonta. He currently teaches courses in music technology and audio recording.
